Apple launches a new way to prove a photo was shot with an iPhone (not generated by AI)

At its annual iPhonepalooza today, Apple announced a new feature aimed at making it easier to know where an image came from or whether it’s been edited — the sort of provenance data that could be useful in detecting images altered by AI.

First rumored last month, Apple Reference Image will work with the camera cluster on the just-announced iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. With the feature turned on, iPhone photos can be, in effect, saved twice — once as a normal, editable photo and once as an Apple Reference Image. The reference image will have a unique ID embedded in the image’s metadata that proves that the image was actually captured by a real iPhone camera, not generated by GPT-Image, Nano Banana, or any other AI image model.

Think of it as a counterpart to something like Google’s SynthID. SynthID is a signal that Gemini embeds in AI-generated images to proclaim: “This is fake.” Apple Reference Image will instead say: “This is real.”

But Apple and Google take significantly different approaches in generating this proof. SynthID embeds its signal directly within the pixels of the image — invisible to humans but visible to AI-detection tools. Apple Reference Image data is instead injected into the image’s metadata; the actual image isn’t altered. Capture telemetry data (like hardware IDs and sensor signatures) is sent up to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which then creates a unique signature tying the reference image to that specific iPhone. (Apple promises it doesn’t see the actual photo, only data about it, and the process only runs on photos you choose to sign.)

If you think of SynthID as a tag that follows an image around the web, Apple Reference Image is more like a receipt the photographer can show later as proof of origin. (Apple calls it a “digital negative.”) If AI-doctored versions of a photo start circulating online, a photojournalist could produce the reference image to conclusively prove what the camera sensor originally saw.

Camera companies like Nikon and Canon have embraced a different metadata-driven provenance standard named C2PA Content Credentials — C2PA standing for the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity. Google also supports the C2PA standard in its Pixel phones, and C2PA has some European media company members (Die Zeit, France TV, AFP). But Apple hasn’t signed on to using Content Credentials — and now we know it believes it has a better approach.
